Follow along as we start building a brand for a business that has been around for a long time. All was going well so nothing was spent on branding or business identity.
Now the tide has changed and a drastic change is needed to keep this business in the black.
We get the phone call, “Hi, you build web sites?”
Yes we do!
“Great! I need one to get more work!”
OK, tell me what you do.
“I paint, do handyman services and some other home improvements.”
Alright, so your truck is lettered, your matching business cards & flyers are at every gas station, convenience store, supermarket etc that will let you post/leave them?
You also have a professionally designed brochure with before and after pictures of some of your work that you leave with every client that you meet with while out doing estimates in your easily identifiable work truck?
“Well I do have business cards and flyers but my truck isn’t lettered.”
Ok, a web site is the last piece of the puzzle. In your case it would serve as a tool for showing past projects to potential customers. It is a good thing to have but not where you need to start. The first thing you need to do is start building a brand for your business. We need to get you recognized just driving around the towns in your area. Designing a catchy layout and lettering your truck is the priority.
Next you will need matching business cards.
“But I have a lot of business cards on hand.”
Business cards are not that expensive, but there is nothing wrong with using them up. You should be handing out 2000-2500 business cards per year. Leaving 10-20 cards at gas stations, markets, real estate offices etc is cheap effective marketing.
Then you may want to canvass neighborhoods and pass out matching flyers. It is a lot of foot work but can pay off well and is another way to market your business. Remember, driving around the area(s) the next day in your matching vehicle is a great way to build brand recognition.
“This makes a lot of sense. How do we get started?”
I’ll need to know what your budget is...
As much as I don’t like to ask this question, I have to. Without knowing your budget I have no way of knowing how much design time I can use, how many colors to use in the layout, or how big an area we can cover on your vehicle.
“Hmmm, err, wellll, ok I think I am willing to spend $XXXX. Will that be enough?”
I can work within your current budget to do a good layout, letter the truck and give you a 1000 business cards. If you want me to produce brochures and flyers I will need a bit more but those items are not to costly to design and produce. You may want to consider job site signs also. I will need a deposit to start developing your brand.
“Oh yeah, job site signs. I’ve used those before. Can I give you a credit card?”
Absolutely! I will draw up the work order explaining exactly what you will get for the price we discussed. You may add to it at any time but all additional work will be billed at our hourly rate. This will also be spelled out in the work order to protect both of us.
“I understand that, we both work in a similar manner.”
Great! Now what is the year, make & model of the truck...
